The Silverback mountain Gorilla is our Mascot

The Silverback is the Leader of his Troop

The male Silverback mountain gorilla is the strong, mature, leader of a troop of gorillas.  He uses his strength to protect all gorillas in his troop.  The Silverback is strong, calm, tolerant and he cares for all gorillas equally including the young gorillas.

Strength

The Silverback embodies “Peace through Stength”.  A Silverback can dead lift in excess of 1,750 lbs (800 Kg).  This strength is used primarily for defense of the troop - not aggression.

Maturity

The mountain gorilla does not reach maturity until around 15 years of age.  This is mid-life for mountain gorillas which typically live 30 - 35 years in the wild.  At 15, the mountain gorillas develop the silver on their backs - hence the name “Silverback” and at this middle age they look to lead their own group (troop) of gorillas.

Peaceful, Calm, Tolerant

The Silverback is known for its peaceful behavior.  He will take care of the baby gorillas in the troop.  He is a gentle giant.  He uses his strength to push over trees to bring fruit to the ground to feed his troop.

Men - we need to follow the way of the Silverback

Men - we need good examples of strong male leaders who lead properly and use their strength properly to protect their families and communities.  The Silverback shows us ways to be a strong man, strong leader and strong provider for ourselves and our families and communities.
